ACTEM is pleased to announce the 10th annual Maine Educator of the Year Awards. The intention of the award is to seek out exceptional educators who use educational technology to impact student learning. Beginning this year, there are two categories which educators can apply for. The categories honor one teacher and one leader who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and leadership in implementing technology to improve education.
The two categories honor one teacher and one leader who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and leadership in implementing technology to improve education. Materials will be posted July 1, 2008 at the ACTEM website, submission deadline September 8, 2008.
Definition of a Maine Educator of the Year:
It is the intent of ACTEM to model the definition of teacher to align with the ISTE Outstanding Teacher Award to recognize those persons currently responsible for the day-to-day instruction of PK–12 students, regardless of subject matter. There is an assumption that under this scenario, there will be an articulated curriculum and some type of assessment of learning. Therefore, nominees for this award may also include such individuals as library media specialists, technology integration specialists, etc. for it is the duties and responsibilities of one’s job that define one’s role, rather than one’s title. Of note however, if more than seventy-five percent of one’s responsibilities do not include the direct instruction of PK–12 age students, then the nomination for Outstanding Teacher would not be
appropriate. This definition will be aligned with the ISTE Outstanding Teacher definition; in the event that the Maine Technology Educator of the Year is further nominated for the international ISTE Outstanding Teacher.
Criteria:
1. The nominee’s work can be used as a model.
2. The nominee has demonstrated his/her ability to both deliberately plan for and incorporate in the use of technology for the purpose of improving the educational setting.
3. The quality of education and/or work experience has been significantly advanced in the nominee’s workplace as a result of the nominee’s efforts.
4. The nominee works tirelessly to genuinely improve the quality of education.
This award could go to teachers, technology library media specialists, technology integration specialists, etc. for it is the duties and responsibilities of one’s job that define one’s role, rather than one’s title.
Definition of a Maine Leader of the Year:
All items in the Maine Educator of the Year definition except, more than 25% of their time is other than direct instruction with the Pre-K-12 population. This definition will be aligned with the ISTE Outstanding Leader definition; in the event that the Maine Technology Leader of the Year is further nominated for the international ISTE Outstanding Teacher.
Criteria:
1. The nominee’s work can be used as a model.
2. The nominee has demonstrated his/her ability to both deliberately plan for and incorporate the use of technology for the purpose of improving the educational setting.
3. The quality of education and/or work experience has been significantly advanced in the nominee’s workplace as a result of the nominee’s efforts.
4. The nominee works tirelessly to genuinely improve the quality of education.
5. Provided leadership in K-12 Maine school(s).
6. Had a positive impact on technology locally and/or regionally.
7. Demonstrated ethical/moral policies for technology use which set a model for the district.
8. Supported technology within the context of school reform, restructuring and improvement.
9. Demonstrated a commitment to ongoing self-education by keeping abreast of emerging technologies.
