Maine Technology Leadership Symposium
Oct.16, 2008 - Augusta Civic Center
Part of MAINEducation 2008 Pre-Conference Sessions

ACTEM and CoSN (the Consortium for School Networking) are pleased to announce the first “Maine Technology Leadership Symposium”. This event will be held in conjunction with our annual MAINEducation Technology Conference this October. The symposium will be held from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM on October 16th, 2008 at the Augusta Civic Center and is designed to provide professional development for district and/or building technology leaders. CoSN is the country’s premier voice for K-12 education leaders who use technology strategically to improve teaching and learning.

Designed for the professional development of district/building technology leaders (coordinators, directors, CIO’s, CTOs)
The Symposium will:
•       Help you understand the key skills you need to succeed as the district/building technology leader
•       Provide you with an understanding of the research on what works around effective use of technology in education
•       Give you the latest information on key trends in school networking
•       Offer excellent networking opportunities

9:00 – 9:05 AM   Welcome, Crystal Priest, ACTEM President

9:05 – 10:30 AM -  Learning to Change, Changing to Learn: Global Lessons on Leadership & Vision
Most of the research on effectiveness of technology in education concludes that to date most technology has been “over-promised” with little impact on learning. Yet, some important research is also showing that with strong collaborative leadership with a clear vision and a commitment to quality professional development, technology in education can be transformative. Come hear about lessons learned from global research. Learn about the critical role of the school leader in setting the vision and the essential skills that superintendents and district/building technology leaders need for success. -- Keith Krueger, Chief Executive Officer, CoSN

10:30 – 11:30 AM -  Crisis Preparedness: Leadership for IT Disaster Recovery
District’s technology programs have grown to touch virtually every aspect of activities in modern-day schools – teaching and learning, data-tracking and record-keeping, internal and external communications, and more. Recent events in our country such as Hurricane Katrina, the tragedy at Virginia Tech, and wildfires in California have illustrated the need for school technology leaders to be actively involved in crisis preparedness to ensure student safety and business continuity. Learn about a forthcoming CoSN leadership initiative which will focus on: 1) The role of school technology leaders in district/school disaster recovery planning; 2) Identifying best practices and models for maintaining communication links, protecting data, and utilizing resources in times of emergency; 3) Developing strategies for the shutdown and subsequent startup of critical services while following best practices for responsible green computing. -- Sheryl R. Abshire, Ph.D., CoSN Chair and Chief Technology Officer, Calcasieu Parish School System, LA

11:30 - 12:15 PM -  Essential Skills of the District/Building Tech Leader
O.K., you are the person in charge of technology at your school or district. What are the essential skills that you need to succeed? Where do you turn to continuously expand your knowledge base? While the responsibilities of vary by district, CoSN has developed a Framework of Essential Skills. Learn about this framework and then participate in an interactive exercise to identify your strengths and weaknesses.  -- Sheryl Abshire, Ph.D., CoSN Chair and Chief Technology Officer, Calcasieu Parish School System, LA; and Keith Krueger, Chief Executive Officer, CoSN
Come join us at this first ever CoSN event in Maine. Cost to attend the Maine Technology Leadership Symposium is only $50 for ACTEM members.
