A team of five notable ACTEM members comprised a panel to address the topic "Shrinking the Technology Gaps Among Administrators, Technology Coordinators, and Students" at a conference hosted by the Maine Principal's Association in Augusta on March 26, 2009. Alice Barr, Technology Integrator at Yarmouth High School, coordinated the expert panel which included Technology Coordinators Gary Lanoie (Cape Elizabeth), Cheryl Oakes (Wells-Ogunquit), Tyler Dunphy (Westbrook), and Angel Allen (SAD 9 & SAD 58).
The morning session featured Messalonskee High computer teacher Gail George and two of her students addressing the topic, “Who Are We and What Do We Know?”
"The students (a sophomore and a senior) did a very good job explaining how they learn both in and outside of school and how many new tools have helped," Alice Barr noted. "They answered many questions from the audience on policy and filtering."
The panel's charge in the afternoon was to address the broad topic of “The Digital Student in the 21st Century,” which was divided into two sections. The first section explored who the 21st century learner that is in today's classroom is. The panel then explored the vision and preparation schools might consider in preparing for the addition of MacBook laptops for high school students in the fall. A question-and-answer period followed.
