ContentBarrier X4 (Intego)
Do you need a way to control student access to the Internet when students take their Mac laptops outside of your school building?

ACTEM is pleased to announce an alliance with Intego (www.intego.com) to offer Maine schools the special price of $7.20 per seat for the Mac ContentBarrier X4 filtering program. This license includes one year of updates. Updates renewals may be renewed annually for approx. $3 per seat. There is no minimum purchase or shipping charge. ContentBarrier X4 is delivered electronically so please include your email address and school phone number when ordering. Orders should be sent directly to ACTEM (fax 641-2556).

The Part Number is: CBX4-MU           Description: ContentBarrier X4 MultiSeat License           Price: $7.20 per seat

There are no shipping or processing charges.    Email address and school phone must be included on your P.O.

ContentBarrier X4 requires a Macintosh computer running either PowerPC or Intel microprocessors running OS X 10.2.8 or higher and 40 MB free hard disk space.

On orders of 100 or more seats, Intego will provide a custom installer package upon request. For more information on ordering ContentBarrrier X4 contact Craig Dickinson (cdickinson@actem.org) at 646-2918.

Rick Barter, technology coordinator at Connors Emerson School in Bar Harbor, tried ContentBarrier X4 on a few student laptops and was impressed. “It is an easy application to set up and it does give us the control we need as well as other features like the ability to generate logs of student activity and have them emailed periodically to a designated address,” Rick says. ContentBarrier X4 also offers the ability to easily limit and report on access in a variety of ways.

The proliferation of open networks motivated Rick to try ContertBarrier X4. “We've been sending our MLTI iBooks home since the beginning of the project (we were one of the 9 pilot schools) without too many problems with students accessing inappropriate material outside of school because we never set up the iBooks to work for dial up etc. Now with open wireless networks everywhere, this has become a problem. Our entire downtown area is a free WiFi hot zone and a drive around town running~MacStumbler reveals many open networks.”

Rick adds, “Because we can't control student access outside of school, our administration has decided that we should disallow access outside of school by assigning static ips on the iBooks, so DHCP just won't happen outside of the building. I believe ContentBarrier x4 will give us the control we need outside of school and peace of mind.”
